security question
Backup authentication query
A security question is a preset question used to verify identity when accessing an account, typically as a backup when a password is forgotten.
Common examples ask for a mother's maiden name, first pet, or childhood street.
The answers function as secondary passwords: What's your security question? The name of my first car.
Security questions are increasingly criticized as weak protection since answers can often be researched or guessed.
