attack rate

Disease spread measure

Attack rate is an epidemiological measure of how many people in a population develop a disease during a specific outbreak or time period, usually expressed as a percentage.

Despite the name, it's technically a proportion rather than a rate.

Public health officials use attack rates to assess outbreak severity and transmission: The attack rate among wedding guests was 40%.

Secondary attack rate measures spread within households or close contacts after initial exposure.
