artist's proof
Creator's personal impression
An artist's proof is a print from a limited edition that the artist retains rather than selling, traditionally used to check quality before the main run.
These proofs are typically marked "A.P." or "E.A." (épreuve d'artiste) and numbered separately from the main edition.
Though originally working copies, artist's proofs have become collectible in their own right and are sometimes considered more valuable than numbered prints from the regular edition.
