arctangent

Angle-finding function

Arctangent is the inverse of the tangent function in trigonometry—given a ratio, it returns the angle that would produce that ratio.

If the tangent of 45 degrees is 1, then the arctangent of 1 is 45 degrees.

Written as arctan or tan⁻¹, it appears constantly in physics, engineering, and computing: The angle is the arctangent of the opposite side divided by the adjacent.
