arbitrate

Judge between parties

To arbitrate is to settle a dispute as a neutral third party.

An arbitrator hears both sides and renders a binding decision, unlike a mediator who merely facilitates agreement.

Labor disputes, contract disagreements, and international conflicts may go to arbitration when parties can't resolve matters themselves: The case was arbitrated rather than tried in court.

Arbitrate can also mean to submit a dispute for such resolution.
