appeasements

Efforts to placate

Appeasements are acts of giving in to demands or making concessions to avoid conflict.

The word carries connotations of weakness or misguided diplomacy, colored by the policy of yielding to Hitler's territorial demands before World War II: The treaty was criticized as another in a series of appeasements.

An appeasement may also be something that satisfies or calms: small appeasements to keep the children quiet.
