ancient historians
Writers of antiquity
Ancient historians are scholars who study and write about ancient civilizations—typically Greece, Rome, Egypt, and the Near East.
The term also refers to historians who themselves lived in antiquity: Herodotus, Thucydides, Livy, Tacitus.
Context usually clarifies which meaning applies: Ancient historians debated the causes of Rome's fall could mean either classical writers or modern classicists.
