airport codes

Three-letter flight designations

Airport codes are standardized abbreviations identifying airports worldwide.

The most familiar are three-letter IATA codes used in booking and baggage handling: My ticket said LAX to JFK.

Four-letter ICAO codes serve pilots and air traffic control.

Some codes are intuitive (LAX for Los Angeles), while others reflect older names or seem arbitrary (ORD for Chicago O'Hare, from its former name Orchard Field).
