Washoe

Sign-language primate

Washoe refers to an indigenous people of the Great Basin region around Lake Tahoe and the eastern Sierra Nevada, or to their language.

The Washoe language is a linguistic isolate, unrelated to neighboring tongues.

Washoe is also a county in northwestern Nevada containing Reno.

Separately, Washoe was the name of a chimpanzee famous for learning American Sign Language in the 1960s, a landmark in animal cognition research.
