The Rose
Garden's fragrant queen
The Rose is a 1979 film loosely based on Janis Joplin's life, starring Bette Midler as a self-destructive rock singer.
More often, it refers to the power ballad from that film's soundtrack, which became Midler's signature song: She closed the concert with The Rose.
The song's central metaphor—love as a seed waiting beneath winter snow—has made it a staple at funerals and weddings alike.
