Steel Curtain

Impenetrable metal barrier

The Steel Curtain was the dominant defensive unit of the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 1970s, anchored by players like "Mean" Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, and Mel Blount.

The nickname evokes an impenetrable barrier—steel for Pittsburgh's industrial heritage, curtain echoing the Cold War's Iron Curtain.

The term now stands for any suffocating, relentless defense: Their pass rush was a steel curtain all season.
