Radical Republican
Post-war congressional faction
Radical Republicans were members of the Republican Party during and after the American Civil War who advocated aggressive measures against the Confederacy and, later, strong protections for freed slaves during Reconstruction.
They pushed for abolition, Black suffrage, and harsh terms for readmitting Southern states.
The Radical Republicans impeached President Andrew Johnson for obstructing their Reconstruction policies.
The term now sometimes describes any Republican seen as ideologically extreme, though this usage is informal and imprecise.
