Saint Lazarus
Risen from tomb
Saint Lazarus refers to two biblical figures often conflated in tradition.
The first is Lazarus of Bethany, whom Jesus raised from the dead after four days in the tomb—a central miracle in Christian scripture.
The second is the beggar Lazarus from a parable, covered in sores and ignored by a rich man.
The leprous beggar gave rise to lazaretto, a quarantine hospital, and the name Lazarus now evokes miraculous recovery: The team pulled a Lazarus and won in overtime.
