SSL/TLS

Web security protocol

SSL/TLS is a pair of cryptographic protocols that secure internet communications.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) was the original; TLS (Transport Layer Security) is its successor and current standard.

Both encrypt data transmitted between browsers and servers, preventing eavesdropping.

The padlock icon in your browser indicates an SSL/TLS connection.

Though SSL is technically obsolete, people still say "SSL" when they mean TLS: Make sure your site has an SSL certificate.
