SIM hijack
Carrier identity theft
SIM hijack is a form of identity theft in which criminals convince a mobile carrier to transfer a victim's phone number to a SIM card they control.
Once they have the number, attackers can intercept calls and text messages, including two-factor authentication codes, giving them access to bank accounts, email, and cryptocurrency wallets.
Also called SIM swapping or SIM jacking, this fraud typically involves social engineering carrier employees or exploiting weak account security.
She lost thousands after a SIM hijack gave scammers access to her banking app.
