Roman sculpture
Ancient Italian carvings
Roman sculpture encompasses the statues, reliefs, busts, and carved monuments produced in ancient Rome and its empire, roughly from the 8th century BCE through the 5th century CE.
While heavily influenced by Greek traditions, Roman sculpture developed distinctive features: an emphasis on realistic portraiture capturing individual likeness, narrative relief panels commemorating military victories, and portrait busts of emperors and citizens.
The museum's collection of Roman sculpture includes several imperial busts.
