Roman fort

Ancient military encampment

A Roman fort was a permanent military installation built by the Roman army throughout their empire, typically featuring standardized rectangular layouts with defensive walls, gates, barracks, headquarters buildings, and granaries.

These fortifications housed auxiliary troops or legionary detachments and served as bases for controlling conquered territories.

Many European towns and cities, particularly in Britain, grew from settlements that developed around Roman forts—place names ending in -chester, -caster, or -cester often indicate such origins.
