River Valley
Geographic community designation
A river valley is the elongated lowland carved by a river and its tributaries over time.
The term describes both the physical geography—the channel, floodplain, and surrounding slopes—and often the region as a cultural or economic unit: the Nile River Valley, river valley civilizations.
River valleys have historically attracted settlement because of fertile soil, water access, and natural transportation routes.
