Plato's Cave
Allegory of ignorance
Plato's Cave refers to an allegory from the philosopher's *Republic* describing prisoners chained in a cave who see only shadows on a wall and mistake them for reality.
When one prisoner escapes and sees the actual world, he understands the shadows were mere illusions.
The allegory illustrates the difference between ignorance and enlightenment, or between appearances and deeper truth.
In casual use, someone living in Plato's Cave is unaware of realities beyond their limited perspective.
