Orthodox cross
Three-barred Christian symbol
An Orthodox cross is a variation of the Christian cross used in Eastern Orthodox churches, distinguished by three horizontal bars.
The top bar represents the sign placed above Christ's head, the middle bar where his hands were nailed, and the lower slanted bar his footrest—traditionally tilted to show one thief ascending to heaven, the other descending to hell.
The Orthodox cross topped the cathedral's golden dome.
