Novocain

Dentist's injection brand

Novocain is a trademark for procaine, a local anesthetic used primarily in dentistry to numb tissue during procedures.

The name has become nearly generic for any dental numbing injection: The dentist gave me a shot of Novocain.

By extension, novocain can describe emotional numbness or deadening: grief like novocain.
