North and South refers to the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell (1854–55) depicting class conflict in industrial England, or to the American Civil War division between Union and Confederate states.
In Cockney rhyming slang, it means mouth: Shut your North and South.
The phrase also describes any fundamental geographic or economic divide: the global North and South.
