MPEG-1

Early compression format

MPEG-1 is a standard for compressing audio and video, developed in the early 1990s for storing media on CDs and other digital formats.

Its audio layer, particularly MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III), became the dominant format for digital music distribution.

The video quality approximates VHS recordings: The old footage was encoded in MPEG-1.
