Lower Egypt

Northern Egyptian region

Lower Egypt is the northern region of Egypt, encompassing the Nile Delta where the river fans out before reaching the Mediterranean Sea.

The name seems counterintuitive—lower means north here—but reflects the Nile's flow: the river runs from higher elevations in the south to lower ground at the sea.

In ancient times, Lower Egypt was one of two kingdoms, unified with Upper Egypt around 3100 BCE.

The region remains Egypt's most fertile and densely populated area.
