Lavater

Face-reading theory founder

Johann Kaspar Lavater was an 18th-century Swiss pastor and writer best known for popularizing physiognomy—the belief that character can be read from facial features.

His illustrated treatises influenced European thought and art, though physiognomy is now considered pseudoscience.

The name sometimes appears in discussions of face-reading or character assessment: a Lavater of the modern age.
