L-plate
Student driver's indicator
An L-plate is a sign displaying a red letter L on a white background, required on vehicles driven by learner drivers in the UK, Australia, and other countries.
The L stands for learner.
Figuratively, someone still on L-plates is new to something and still learning: I'm still on L-plates when it comes to cooking.
