Kurtz

Kurtz is the mysterious ivory trader in Joseph Conrad's *Heart of Darkness*, who has abandoned civilization's constraints in the African jungle and dies uttering "The horror!

The horror!" The name has become shorthand for someone who has gone native, succumbed to megalomania, or descended into moral darkness while pursuing power in remote or lawless conditions.

Marlon Brando's Colonel Kurtz in *Apocalypse Now* transplanted the character to Vietnam, reinforcing the archetype: He's gone full Kurtz out there.
