dissociative amnesia

Stress-triggered memory gap

Dissociative amnesia is a psychological condition in which a person cannot recall important personal information, typically following trauma or severe stress.

Unlike ordinary forgetting, the memory gaps are too extensive to be explained by normal processes.

The lost memories usually involve a specific traumatic event or period: She had dissociative amnesia about the accident and the weeks that followed.

The memories may return gradually or suddenly, sometimes years later.
