Korotkoff sounds

Arterial pressure tones

Korotkoff sounds are the tapping or swooshing noises heard through a stethoscope when measuring blood pressure.

As the cuff deflates, blood begins flowing turbulently through the compressed artery, producing sounds that mark systolic pressure (first sound) and diastolic pressure (when sounds disappear).

Named for the Russian physician who described them in 1905.
