Juliet balconies
Doorway guard rails
A Juliet balcony is a narrow railing or balustrade fitted directly outside a window or French doors, creating the appearance of a balcony without a platform to stand on.
Named for the famous balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet, though Shakespeare's text never specifies one.
The design allows doors to open fully for light and air while providing a safety barrier: The apartment had floor-to-ceiling windows with a Juliet balcony overlooking the courtyard.
