jades

Green ornamental stones

Jades is the plural of jade, which names two distinct minerals—jadeite and nephrite—prized for their toughness and translucent green color.

The stone appears in jewelry, carvings, and ceremonial objects, especially in East Asian cultures: She collected antique jades from China.

Jade also describes the color itself, a muted green.

Separately, jade is an old word for a worn-out horse or a disreputable woman, and to jade means to exhaust or make weary: The long campaign had jaded them.
