Jacob and Esau
Birthright and blessing
Jacob and Esau are twin brothers in the Hebrew Bible whose rivalry begins in the womb.
Esau, the firstborn, trades his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew; Jacob later deceives their father Isaac to steal Esau's blessing.
The pair represents sibling conflict, the younger supplanting the elder, and the tension between those who live by cunning versus those who live by strength.
They were like Jacob and Esau from the start.
