Jackson State
Tigers' home university
Jackson State is a historically Black public university in Jackson, Mississippi, founded in 1877.
The school gained tragic prominence in 1970 when police opened fire on a dormitory during student protests, killing two and wounding twelve—an event often overshadowed by the Kent State shootings eleven days earlier.
Jackson State competes athletically in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
