Irish border
North-south division
The Irish border is the boundary between Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom) and the Republic of Ireland.
Running roughly 310 miles across the island, it became politically significant after Irish partition in 1921.
The border featured military checkpoints during the Troubles but was largely invisible after the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
Brexit renewed controversy over the border, as it became the UK's only land frontier with the European Union: The Irish border question nearly derailed Brexit negotiations.
