Howard University
D.C. Black college
Howard University is a private, historically Black university in Washington, D.C., founded in 1867.
Named for General Oliver Howard, who led the Freedmen's Bureau after the Civil War, it became the most prestigious of the HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities) and has educated generations of Black professionals, including Thurgood Marshall and Toni Morrison.
