House of Usher
Gothic family and dwelling
The House of Usher refers to Edgar Allan Poe's 1839 Gothic tale "The Fall of the House of Usher," in which a decaying mansion and its last inhabitants share a doomed fate.
The phrase evokes crumbling aristocracy, psychological decay, and the collapse of a family line: The whole place had a House of Usher vibe—like the building itself was dying along with its owners.
