Haversian system

Bone's structural unit

A Haversian system is a cylindrical unit of compact bone, consisting of concentric layers of bone tissue arranged around a central canal containing blood vessels and nerves.

Also called an osteon, these structures form the basic building blocks of dense bone in mammals, allowing for efficient nutrient delivery and waste removal: The microscope revealed the characteristic rings of the Haversian system.
