Gomer Pyle

Gomer Pyle is a fictional character from 1960s American television—a naive, good-natured Marine private played by Jim Nabors on *The Andy Griffith Show* and its spinoff *Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.* The name became shorthand for a bumbling, unsophisticated person, especially in military contexts: Don't be such a Gomer Pyle.

His catchphrase "Golly!" and earnest cluelessness defined the type.
