Flanders fields
WWI memorial landscape
Flanders fields refers to the battlefields of the Flanders region in Belgium and northern France, where some of World War I's bloodiest fighting occurred.
The phrase evokes the war's catastrophic death toll and became iconic through John McCrae's 1915 poem "In Flanders Fields," which linked the landscape's wild poppies to fallen soldiers.
Red poppies remain symbols of wartime remembrance: They wore poppies to honor those who died in Flanders fields.
