thermal scope

Infrared sighting device

A thermal scope is an optical device that detects infrared radiation, allowing the user to see heat signatures rather than visible light.

Mounted on rifles or used handheld, thermal scopes reveal warm bodies—animals, people, vehicles—against cooler backgrounds, even in complete darkness or through smoke and fog: The hunter spotted the deer through his thermal scope.

Distinguished from night vision, which amplifies existing light.
