Emmet

Old word, ant

Emmet is a dialect word for an ant, surviving mainly in Cornwall and parts of southwestern England.

There it has taken on a second meaning: a tourist, especially one who swarms to coastal areas in summer like ants to a picnic.

The term carries mild disparagement—locals watching their villages overrun by holidaymakers.

The emmets have arrived for August.
