Darien

Gulf near Panama

Darien is a region in eastern Panama near the Colombian border, known for the Darién Gap—a roadless stretch of dense jungle and swamps that breaks the otherwise continuous Pan-American Highway.

The area is notorious for its difficult terrain, making overland travel between Central and South America extremely hazardous.

Migrants attempting to cross the Darién Gap face dangers including wildlife, flooding, and criminal activity.

Darien is also a town name in Connecticut and other U.S. locations.
