Cristo Redentor

Overlooking Rio harbor

Cristo Redentor is the Portuguese name for Christ the Redeemer, the colossal statue of Jesus that stands atop Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

The Art Deco monument, completed in 1931, has become Brazil's most recognizable landmark and a symbol of Rio itself.

English speakers often use the Portuguese name when referring to the statue: We took the train up to Cristo Redentor.
