Church of Scientology

Dianetics-based religious group

The Church of Scientology is a religious organization founded by science fiction writer L.

Ron Hubbard in 1954, based on his self-help system called Dianetics.

The church teaches that humans are immortal spiritual beings called thetans who have forgotten their true nature.

It charges substantial fees for its spiritual counseling programs, called auditing, which use a device called an E-meter.

The organization is controversial—recognized as a religion in some countries, classified as a cult or commercial enterprise in others.

It has been criticized for aggressive litigation against critics, alleged harassment of former members, and secretive upper-level teachings involving an extraterrestrial origin story.
