Bengali Renaissance

Eastern Indian enlightenment

The Bengali Renaissance was a cultural and intellectual awakening in Bengal (now divided between India and Bangladesh) during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Centered in Calcutta under British colonial rule, it produced reformers, writers, and thinkers who challenged traditional practices while synthesizing Eastern and Western ideas.

Figures like Ram Mohan Roy, Rabindranath Tagore, and Swami Vivekananda emerged from this movement, which influenced Indian nationalism and modern Hindu reform.
