Asian flu

1957 pandemic strain

Asian flu refers to a strain of influenza A (H2N2) that emerged in East Asia in 1957 and caused a global pandemic, killing over a million people.

The term is now largely historical, as the strain was replaced by other variants.

More loosely, Asian flu sometimes describes any flu outbreak originating in Asia: Officials worried the Asian flu would spread to Europe.
