1-up

Video game reward

A 1-up is an extra life in a video game—one more chance to continue playing after dying.

The term comes from arcade and early console games where collecting certain items granted additional lives.

Extended to mean any bonus or advantage: Finding that shortcut was a real 1-up.

To 1-up someone is to outdo or one-up them.
