writing lines

Copying sentences repeatedly

Writing lines is a school punishment requiring a student to copy a phrase repeatedly, typically dozens or hundreds of times: I will not talk in class, I will respect my teacher.

The tedium is the point—the repetition supposedly reinforces the lesson while consuming recess or free time.

The practice has declined but remains a cultural reference point for old-fashioned discipline.
