work farms
Penal labor facilities
A work farm is a correctional facility where inmates perform agricultural labor, typically as part of their sentence or rehabilitation.
Historically, work farms operated on the theory that outdoor labor and discipline would reform offenders: The judge sentenced him to six months on the county work farm.
Some were notorious for brutal conditions, particularly in the American South, where they functioned as extensions of convict leasing.
The term now sometimes applies to any minimum-security facility with mandatory work programs.
