women's suffrage movement
Female ballot campaign
The women's suffrage movement was the political campaign to secure voting rights for women, particularly active from the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth century.
In the United States, it culminated with the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920; Britain granted women equal voting rights in 1928.
Activists were called suffragists or, in Britain, suffragettes: Her grandmother had marched with the suffragettes.
